Series:  Understanding the Book of Revelation

Message Title: The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse

Review past series:

o   In chapter 4 we talked about the worship of God the father on the throne.

o   In chapter 5 we talked about the worship of Jesus Christ and the Scroll

o   We learned that the number 7 in the bible represented: Completeness, fullness or the totality of it all. (Ex.-6 days creation 7th day rest, Joshua marching around Jericho how many times? 7, how many days in a week?)

o   You will hear about more 7’s as we read the book of Revelation

Bring you up to speed:

o   The fall of mankind started with Adam and Eve.  And in short because of their sin and disobedience the earth was turned over to Satan.

o   Therefore today Satan has limited authority over the control of the world’s system as God allows it. (Matthew 4:8-11)

o   Last week we read in John’s vision in heaven, that God the father had a scroll in his right hand (which was the deed to the earth to get it back from Satan).

o   But when John looked around there was no one that was worthy enough to take the scroll from the God’s hands.

Revelation 5:1-5 (NIV)

Then I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne a scroll with writing on both sides and sealed with seven seals. 2 And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” 3 But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. 4 I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside.

5 Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”

o   One of the Elders told John that Jesus Christ has the right to take back the title deed or scroll as his inheritance of the earth

o   Let’s dive right into our message today entitled “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

o   The bible teaches that the world is headed towards an increase of wars, crime, economic downfall and natural disasters as never seen before or ever will.

Matthew 24:21 (CEV)-

21 This will be the worst time of suffering since the beginning of the world, and nothing this terrible will ever happen again.

o   All those calamities will mark the outpouring of God’s wrath on the fallen, rebellious world.

o   Revelation chapter 4 and 5 the setting and scene was in heaven.

o   But now in Revelation Chapter 6 the scene shifts to the earth as the seals are broken from the scroll.

·       The first four of the seven seals are known as “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse”.

·       They are symbolic descriptions of different events which will take place in the end times.

Define:  a·poc·a·lypse--the complete final destruction of the world, especially as described in the biblical book of Revelation”

The Opening of the First Seal:

Revelation 6:1-2 (NASB)

6 Then I saw when the Lamb broke one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures saying as with a voice of thunder, “Come.” 2 I looked, and behold, a white horse, and he who sat on it had a bow; and a crown was given to him, and he went out conquering and to conquer.

o   This first horseman likely refers to the Antichrist, who will be given authority and will conquer all who oppose him.

o   The antichrist is the false imitator of the true Christ, who will also return on a white horse (Rev 19:11-16)

1.    This First Horseman of the Apocalypse is believed to be the ______________(Antichrist)

o   He is one who denies or opposes Christ. (Old English: antecrist)

o   The whole world will be obsessed in following him because of the peace and security he will bring. Though it will end up being a false sense of peace and security.

o   The scripture tells us he will have a bow, with no mention of an arrow.  The bow represents war, but the absence of arrows implies that this victory will be a bloodless one---leading to a peace won by agreement and not by war.

The Opening of the Second Seal:

Revelation 6:3-4 (NASB)

3 When He broke the second seal, I heard the second living creature saying, “Come.” 4 And another, a red horse, went out; and to him who sat on it, it was granted to take peace from the earth, and that men would slay one another; and a great sword was given to him.

o   So immediately after the first rider on the white horse brings a sense of false peace and security….BAM!  the second rider shatters this peace with war.

o   The red color symbolizes fire and blood of war.

o   Rather than an arrowless bow, this rider wielded a sword of assassination, uprising and warfare.

2.    The Second Horseman of the Apocalypse refers to terrible ______________(wars) that will break out in the end times.

The Opening of the Third Seal:

Revelation 6:5-6 (NASB)

5 When He broke the third seal, I heard the third living creature saying, “Come.” I looked, and behold, a black horse; and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand. 6 And I heard something like a voice in the center of the four living creatures saying, “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and do not damage the oil and the wine.”

Denarius—(“whole day’s wage”)

3.    The Third horseman of the Apocalypse refers to a great _________________(famine) that will take place.

o   More than likely the famine is a direct result of the wars from the second horseman.

Give example of today- “Bread for the World Institute” dated 10/17/16

Article: “War pushes Yemen to brink of famine”

o   “About 14 million people in Yemen, the Middle East’s poorest country, are suffering from a hunger crisis caused by a brutal war now in its second year. Food insecurity in some parts of the country is categorized as Level 4, “emergency.” Level 5 is “famine.”

o   At least 370,000 children younger than 5 are suffering from severe acute malnutrition, which is fatal if not treated.

How does war cause the famine?:  It destroys food crops as well as people’s access to food - markets, storage facilities, vehicles, and other resources needed for food distribution. Beyond this, conflict destroys communities and creates humanitarian crises as people are forced to leave home with whatever they can carry to escape violence and look for food. Those who flee may feel safer, but they are often worse off than before when it comes to food, shelter, and medicine.”

The Opening of the Fourth Seal:

Revelation 6:7-8 (NASB)

7 When the Lamb broke the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature saying, “Come.” 8 I looked, and behold, an ashen (pale) horse; and he who sat on it had the name Death; and Hades was following with him. Authority was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword and with famine and with pestilence and by the wild beasts of the earth.

o   The fourth horseman of the Apocalypse will bring further warfare and terrible famines along with awful plagues and diseases.

o   One quarter (25%) of the earth will be killed with “sword, famine, pestilence and by the wild beasts of the earth” / that’s about 1.5 billion people.

4.    The Fourth horseman of the Apocalypse refers to ________________ (death).

Matthew 24:21 (CEV)-

21 This will be the worst time of suffering since the beginning of the world, and nothing this terrible will ever happen again.

The Four Horseman represents the: “AntiChrist, “War”, “Famine”, “Death”

What do we do until then?

(Reference the pamphlet)

Walk submissively in obedience

Worship God with our lives

Witness Urgently  (one major purpose of Revelation is to remind believers to continue to share the Good News of Jesus Christ and his forgiveness)

Work Fervently (one day we will give an account of what we have done good or bad- because of what Jesus has done for us  2 Corinth 5:10)

Watch Expectantly (we do not know when the Lord is coming back, but we do know his arrival is closer today than yesterday)  Are you ready?
